The Director General of the Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr. Andreas Grigoriou participated in the informal Council of EU Agriculture Ministers, organised by the Spanish Presidency, on 4 and 5 September in Córdoba, Spain.
The Council discussed the application of new technologies, including new genetic techniques for a sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. During the discussion, ministers referred to the need for initiatives to promote the green and digital transition and the benefits of the application of new technologies in agriculture, but expressed reservations about the use of new gene techniques.
In his intervention, Mr Gregoriou noted the importance of research and innovation development for the use of green and digital technologies in agriculture. He said that the use of these tools will significantly help to ensure the production of sufficient food while contributing to addressing climate change. He stressed the importance of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in this effort and said that on the issue of new genetic techniques there should be clear safeguards to protect biodiversity, small farms and consumers. He noted the importance of cooperation between all actors in the agri-food chain and Member States to create sustainable solutions for the future.
During the informal meeting, the Ministers visited the agricultural research centre of the University of Cordoba and the local wine industries, having the opportunity to learn about innovative technological applications that promote the reduction of inputs in agriculture such as water, fertilisers and pesticides, improving the economic viability of farms.
