Deputy Minister of State for Culture Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou participated today in the Council of the European Union (EU) for Culture, Audiovisual and Media, which took place in Brussels.
The main topic of the Council was the discussion on the future of the cultural and creative sectors in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In her intervention, the Deputy Minister referred to the design of an action plan to support the cultural sector using AI, in cooperation with the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, as well as with academic institutions and centres of excellence.
Dr Kassianidou stressed the importance of dialogue with the cultural and creative industries in order to identify needs and promote targeted policies. Noting that national initiatives are at an early stage, she suggested the exchange of good practices between Member States. Recognising the potential of AI in the creative and cultural sector, he stressed the importance of protecting intellectual property rights and personal data.
The Council was preceded by an informal working breakfast, during which Ministers discussed sustainable investments in the European audiovisual ecosystem, in view of the expected revision of the Audiovisual Services Directive.
It should be noted that on the evening of 13 May, the Minister of State participated in an informal working dinner organised by the Belgian Presidency for the Ministers of Culture in Antwerp. The Ministers had a guided tour of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) and subsequently discussed the role of culture in promoting and strengthening European identity in the face of geopolitical challenges, while respecting the diversity of local, regional and national identities.
Dr Kassianidou underlined the value of culture for the promotion of European and national identity. She noted that culture promotes the common principles and values of the EU, such as democracy and human rights, and fosters respect for the different traditions, languages and historical experiences in Europe. He pointed out that it is important to enhance the mobility of people working in the creative industries and of people carrying out research on cultural heritage. He also referred to initiatives being implemented in our country, such as the Cultural Youth Card, and to the close cooperation between education and cultural institutions. He also highlighted the efforts made to protect and promote our cultural heritage. He also referred to the joint European initiatives implemented through Europeana, the Creative Europe programme, the EU National Institutes for Culture (ENIC) networks, and the Horizon Europe funding programme, which demonstrate the value of cooperation between Member States in strengthening the European identity.
