The Deputy Minister of State for Culture Ms Vasiliki Kassianidou participated in the work of the EU Council for Culture, Audiovisual and Media which took place today in Brussels. During the Council's proceedings, the Ministers wore orange scarves and ties, symbolically participating in the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is 25 November.
The main topic of discussion at the Council was the working conditions of artists and cultural professionals. In her intervention, the Deputy Minister referred to the promotion of the implementation of an institutional framework in Cyprus, which regulates the status and professional status of artists, as well as their social security benefits. She highlighted the provisions included in the new sponsorship programmes for theatrical productions, which safeguard the rights of the professionals involved in them.
In this context, Ms Kassianidou also underlined the need to strengthen European cooperation to effectively address the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence, green and digital transition, by further enhancing information, education and training of artists and workers.
Furthermore, the Deputy Minister supported Slovenia's initiative regarding the "Ljubljana Manifesto for Reading at High Level", which underlines the value of reading books in the digital age. She also informed about the Youth Culture Card programme implemented by Cyprus, through which young people have the opportunity to attend cultural events and visit cultural sites.
Ms Kassianidou also welcomed Italy's initiative to support Ukraine in the reconstruction of buildings of high historical and cultural value. She noted that due to the ongoing destruction of cultural monuments in occupied Cyprus, we support any efforts undertaken to protect and preserve the world's cultural heritage and highlighted the expertise that Cyprus has in the protection of cultural heritage, which is often shared through bilateral and international cooperation with other states and organisations.
