[PIO] Participation of the Assistant Commissioner for Communications Mr.Petros Galides at the General Assembly of the Eastern Cooperation Network of

Mr. Petros Galides, Assistant Commissioner for Communications, following an invitation in his capacity as Chairman of the Euro-Mediterranean Electronic Communications Regulators Group (EMERG), participated in the General Assembly of the Eastern Cooperation Network of Electronic Communications Regulators (EaPeReg) held in Bucharest, Romania on 22 and 23 May 2024.

Mr. Galides participated in a round table discussion on "Insights on Plans, ongoing Projects and Priorities" where he reported on the EMERG work programme and objectives for 2024, as well as on the work programme of the Office of the Commissioner for Electronic Communications Regulation (BEREC) in the light of the new regulations issued by the European Commission (Gigabit infrastructure Act, Gigabit Recommendation etc.).In addition, in his intervention in the conference session on International Cooperation, he stressed EMERG's commitment to continue working to strengthen international cooperation in the Mediterranean region among its Member States and with other international organisations such as ITU, EaPeReg and the European Commission.

Further, he stressed the importance of cooperation in emerging new technology areas related to Electronic Communications, such as cybersecurity, digital markets and artificial intelligence (AI). As a result of these new realities, Galides called for an upgrade of the European Commission's assistance to EMERG and EaPeReg in their efforts to address these new challenges, anticipating that the EU will recognise new, additional responsibilities for these organisations.

Mr. Galides was accompanied by Mr. Panagiotis Kyriakidis, the responsible GERET Officer.
