Today in Reykjavik, the "Reykjavik World Forum-Women Leaders" in which the President of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women and Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Mrs Irene Charalambidou, is participating.
In her intervention on the need to promote equal representation of men and women in politics, Ms Charalambidou stressed that there will never be unanimity in promoting equal representation of men and women, as this is a question of power, which no one wants to share, especially in societies where patriarchal stereotypes prevail. She called on women to take a more active role in this direction. In particular, she referred to her amendments that changed the Rules of Procedure to take into account the need for equal gender representation in the appointment of Assembly officers.
Ms Charalambidou also referred to the recent organisation, on her own initiative, of a special debate in the House of Representatives on "Women's participation in international peace and security: from theory to practice", which brought together women leaders in politics, diplomacy and other fields. Ms. Charalambidou noted that this Debate was organized at the current juncture, amidst the escalating geopolitical instability that undermines international peace and security. Referring to current conflicts raging in the world and particularly the crisis that threatens to destabilize the entire Middle East, Ms. Charalambidou stressed that in the current worrying circumstances we are experiencing, the role of women in peace and security issues is of paramount importance, since, as has been proven, their equal participation enhances the prospects of achieving stable solutions that promote stability, security and peace.
