The 23rd Winter Meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) began yesterday in Vienna.

MEP Mr. Christos Senekis, in his intervention in a debate in the Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment on the promotion of a common OSCE approach to economic and environmental security, said that amidst escalating geopolitical tensions, promoting a common approach is a very difficult challenge and that our collective prosperity depends on sustainable economic growth, efficient resource management and environmental protection.

Mr. Senekis noted that in the last decades, the OSCE has been working to promote a common approach to economic and environmental security. However, he added, new challenges have emerged that require collective action, such as climate change, the effects of which are becoming increasingly evident, particularly in the Mediterranean region. The Cypriot MEP further pointed out that economies have been shaken by the Covid-19 crisis, while the ongoing war in Ukraine is exacerbating the cost of living crisis, which is particularly affecting vulnerable households. He underlined that the flare-up in the Middle East and the risk of generalised instability, as well as attacks by Houthi rebels that have a significant impact on global supply chains, are further hampering governments' efforts to reduce inflation.

Mr. Seneca stressed that strengthening cooperation among participating States, ensuring the adoption of sustainable development policies and good governance are necessary conditions for achieving economic prosperity and environmental sustainability.

In conclusion, he noted that the promotion of environmentally and economically sustainable policies is an investment in security, stability, democracy and prosperity.
