The extraordinary meeting of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe concluded yesterday in Copenhagen.

In a discussion on current challenges facing the OSCE and the Parliamentary Assembly, Mr Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, Vice-President of the Assembly, noted that this international organisation has managed to function and contribute to de-escalation in times of great tensions and major challenges to democracy, such as during the Cold War, while remaining a platform for dialogue. He stressed that the same principles should apply in the current context and stressed the importance of developing tools to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, especially in times of conflict. Mr Hatzigiannis also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation between the OSCE CSO and the OSCE executive structures, particularly the Council of Ministers.

Finally, they exchanged views on current issues concerning the security environment and the challenges of multilateralism and cooperation in the OSCE region.
