The 3rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IP) regional seminar for the Group of 12+ on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), co-organised by the IP and the French Senate, started today in Paris.

In his intervention on the topic "The path towards sustainable development and the green transition", MEP Mr. Stefanos Stefanou noted that the implementation of the UN SDGs is not only an obligation but also a call for action that transcends borders and ideologies, underlining the central role that parliaments play in promoting the green transition and implementing the SDGs. Stressing that the SDGs represent an opportunity for national parliaments to demonstrate their commitment to improving the quality of life of people around the planet, Stefanou highlighted the role of parliaments in this direction through the adoption of legislation that promotes renewable energy, the green transition and environmental protection.

The Cypriot MEP also stressed that through the exercise of parliamentary scrutiny, national parliaments can hold governments accountable for the implementation of legislation and policies promoting the green transition. Equally important is the role of national parliaments in allocating national resources for the promotion and development of sustainable development initiatives, he added, noting that the budget of each state indicates the priorities it sets. Ensuring sufficient resources for the implementation of green growth programmes is the responsibility of parliaments, he stressed, adding that by investing in renewable energy infrastructure and biodiversity and climate conservation measures, parliaments can ensure alignment with the SDGs and a sustainable future for all. Stefanou noted that in order for the contribution of national parliaments to the achievement of the SDGs to be effective, synergy and cooperation with all stakeholders and society is required and assured that the Cyprus Parliament will continue to work with determination for the implementation of the SDGs.
