The work of the 2024 Parliamentary Hearing began today at the UN headquarters in New York. The head of the Cypriot delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, MP Averof Neophytou participated in a debate on "The future of peace and security: From good intentions to renewed collective action".

In his intervention, Mr. Neophytou highlighted the need to effectively address the serious challenges that threaten international peace and security, the importance of understanding the basic principles of the New Agenda for Peace, as well as the recognition of the contribution of parliaments in achieving peace. He noted in this regard that the UN Secretary General's policy document "New Agenda for Peace", which promotes preventive diplomacy and sustainable development, is mainly based on the premise that peace is not achieved when conflict is absent, but when the principles of justice and equity are established.

Referring in particular to the interconnected nature of the modern international environment, Neophytou noted that the formation of peace and security conditions requires a holistic approach, which takes into account economic, social and technological factors. Neophytou underlined the catalytic role that parliaments can play in achieving the desired change in international affairs. In this effort, he stressed, respect for international law and the protection of human rights and the rule of law must be fundamental and indisputable prerequisites.

Cyprus is another example of the failure of the international community to remain committed to the principles of international law and the UN resolutions on Cyprus. The logic of two measures and two stations, which the international community unfortunately continues to adopt, has no place in a peaceful and secure global environment, he concluded.
