The Civil Defence Force of the Ministry of Interior recently received a positive response from the European Commission, following its request for the registration and inclusion of the Light USAR Team in the European Civil Protection Pool (ECPP).

The European Union created the ECPP to promote European cooperation in the field of civil protection. Its aim is to enable a faster, better coordinated and more effective European response to man-made and natural disasters.

The ECPP brings together resources/units from 25 member and participating states, ready to respond at short notice to countries affected by disasters and requesting assistance. These resources/units can be rescue teams, medical teams, experts, specialised equipment or transport units.

It is worth noting that to be included in the pool of units, a search and rescue team must first obtain certification on the basis of the INSARAG international standards by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA).

With the completion of this process, the certification of the Republic of Cyprus' competence and professionalism, which, through the Civil Defence, can respond to search and rescue incidents after natural disasters, both in Cyprus and abroad, has been completed.

The inclusion of the Cypriot team in the European Union's pool of units is proof of the capabilities and operational readiness of the Republic of Cyprus to respond in this field.
