The 23rd Inter-Parliamentary Conference on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), which takes place in the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the current six-month Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), started today in Madrid. The House of Representatives is represented by MPs Mr. George Karoullas (leader), Mr. George Koukoumas, Mr. Zacharias Koulias, Mr. In his intervention during the debate on the priorities in the areas of CFSP and CSDP, Mr. Karoullas referred to the continuous Turkish violations of international law and the sovereignty of Cyprus and called on Turkey to build a positive agenda with the EU on the basis of Euro-Atlantic values, noting that the Cyprus problem should be an essential part of the discussion on EU-Turkey relations. The head of the Cypriot delegation also referred to Turkey's instrumentalisation of migration, stressing that a common European approach to irregular migration is needed. He also called on the EU to react to the ethnic cleansing carried out in Nagorno Karabakh on the basis of its principles and values. Hulusi Akar, in which he advocated the need to strengthen Euro-Turkish relations, praising Turkey's allegedly constructive role as a regional security factor, Mr. Karullas stressed that Turkey should implement itself what it claims to promote in regional conflicts, in particular respect for international law and human rights. He also called on the country to contribute to the resolution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and EU principles and values.
Attalidou reiterated Cyprus' strong and unwavering support to Ukraine and expressed concern about the risk of escalation of the war with the use of nuclear weapons, stressing that the EU must be a leading player in the effort to prevent this eventuality. Recalling the EU's efforts to decouple the EU from Russia, Attalidou expressed concern about the increasing energy trade of EU Member States with Azerbaijan, despite its illegal actions and aggression against the Armenian population in Nagorno Karabakh and underlined that the EU should choose its partners on the basis of their commitment to its principles and values, including respect for international law. Attalidou also called on the EU to stand in solidarity with the refugees from Nagorno Karabakh and to ensure the protection of those who choose to remain in their land.
