Under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, the Memoranda of Understanding between the Social Welfare Services, the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and the Local Authorities for the pan-Cypriot extension of the European co-funded programme "Neighbourhood Social Worker", which is part of the Cohesion Policy Programme "THALIA 2021-2027", were signed today, 28 March 2024.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, in his address, referred to the strengthening of the local social network and the development of social services programmes at the level of Local Authorities as a European-oriented social policy, which many Member States of the European Union are implementing through the general approach for decentralisation and strengthening of Local Authorities. The President of the Republic of Cyprus noted that "with this institution and with the reform in general, we are giving much more powers to all of you, the Local Government. We are by your side to help you to successfully implement and realise these powers that we are giving to Local Government."

Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Ms Marilena Evangellou described the Neighbourhood Social Worker as an extremely important social service, noting that the launch of the Pancyprian expansion follows the successful pilot implementation of the programme in eight municipalities and communities, including remote/rural areas. As he said, the Neighbourhood Social Worker "is a successful synergy of State and Local Government, aiming at early identification of challenges and addressing them, prevention and two-way communication with citizens".

The signing of a total of 39 memoranda of cooperation, covering 17 municipalities and 22 clusters of communities, is, as Mrs. Evangelou stressed, the sealing of the beginning of the nationwide expansion of the Neighbourhood Social Worker, demonstrating the importance of synergies for the provision of better and higher quality services to the citizen.
