Yesterday, 20 December 2021, the application process for the first phase of the Decommissioning Plan for Hazardous Old Vehicles of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works was completed with great interest. The Scheme is part of the Government's broader strategy for the integration of electromobility in Cyprus and the transition to green transport and sustainable mobility. The aim is, inter alia, to achieve decarbonisation, as stated in the National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030, which foresees the transition to climate neutrality by 2050.
From 6 to 20 December 2021, a total of 3,145 applications were submitted by beneficiaries for the scrapping of polluting vehicles. More specifically, they were submitted:
- 2,973 applications for scrapping and replacement with a new private passenger vehicle with an emission mass ≤50 gr/km - CO2,
- 16 applications for scrapping and replacement with a new taxi vehicle with an emission mass ≤50 gr/km - CO2,
- 25 applications for scrapping and replacement with a new wheelchair vehicle with an emission mass ≤50 gr/km - CO2,
- 63 applications for withdrawal and replacement with a new multi-family vehicle with an emission mass ≤50 gr/km - CO2,
- 51 applications for withdrawal and purchase of a new electric bicycle (assisted cycling), and
- 17 applications for withdrawal of an old vehicle in return for free tickets for use on regular bus services.
The amounts to be made available for the purpose of scrapping an old vehicle and replacing it with a new vehicle range from €7,500 to €12,000.
The processing of applications will begin immediately and eligible beneficiaries will be notified of the pre-approval of their application. Thereafter, and if pre-approved, the beneficiary will have two months to provide proof of ordering the new vehicle and 12 months to register it.
Finally, it is recalled that from yesterday, 21 December 2021, and until 3 January 2022, the application procedure for the first phase of the Electric Vehicle Sponsorship Schemes is in force. Interested parties may submit their application online via the website www.ev.gov.cy. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis based on the date of submission
