From 24 to 26 April 2024, the Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC) General Robert Brieger will pay an official visit to Cyprus, at the invitation of the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Georgios Tsitsikostas.

On Thursday, 25 April 2024, the official reception ceremony of the President of the Commission took place at the General Headquarters of the General Staff of the National Guard (GNEF), followed by a private meeting with the Chief of the National Guard. The visit to the General Headquarters also included a briefing on the mission and operational capabilities of the NF, as well as expanded discussions on current issues related to the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union (EU), such as the development of military rapid reaction capabilities and ongoing military operations. Views were also exchanged on broader security issues such as developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and Ukraine. The visits of operational interest include, among others, the Naval Base "Evangelos Florakis" and the Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (RSRC), where the EUMC President will be briefed on their mission, work and capabilities.

General Brieger also visited the Makedonitissa Military Cemetery, where, after being briefed, he laid a wreath, paying tribute to the memory of those who died in the struggle for the freedom of the RoC.

The visit comes three weeks before the Ordinary Meeting of the EU Military Committee in Brussels, at the level of the Heads of the Armed Forces of the 27 Member States, in the framework of which the election process for the new President will take place. General Brieger completes his term of office in May 2025. In preparation, the Chief has held face-to-face or telephone contacts, exchanging views with all candidates.
