Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos paid a two-day (6-7 March 2024) official visit to Armenia, following an invitation by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
In the framework of the visit, Mr.Kombos had a private meeting with his Armenian counterpart today. This was followed by extended consultations with the participation of delegations of the two Ministries, where bilateral relations, European Union (EU)-Armenia relations, as well as the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace negotiations were reviewed. The Ministers also discussed international developments, focusing on the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The Foreign Minister also briefed Mr Mirzoyan on current developments in the Cyprus issue, conveying the Government's readiness to resume talks to reach a viable solution, a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, as envisaged by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. At the same time, he thanked Mr. Mirzoyan for Armenia's long-standing principled stance on the Cyprus problem.
Following the consultations, Mr. Kobos and Mr. Mirzoyan signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus. At the same time, the two Ministers made statements to the media, where Mr. Kombos announced the decision of the Cyprus Government to open a Diplomatic Mission in Yerevan in the nearest future. The Foreign Minister also announced the financing by the Republic of Cyprus of the construction of 10 greenhouses within the framework of an initiative for the rehabilitation of displaced families in Nagorno-Karabakh, in cooperation with the non-governmental organization "My Step Foundation" and the Armenian National Agriculture University.
During his visit, Mr. Kombos was received by President Vahagn Khachaturyan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He also had a meeting with the members of the Cyprus-Armenia Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee. During the meetings, the excellent level of bilateral relations was confirmed and the will of both sides to further strengthen cooperation was expressed. Paruyr Hovhannisyan, visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial and laid a wreath on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, paying tribute to the victims of the genocide.
