[PIO] Official visit of the Chief of the National Guard to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

The Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis, accompanied by a delegation of officers of the General Staff of the National Guard, paid an official visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from 3 to 5 January 2022, at the invitation of the Chief of the Armed Forces of Jordan, Major General Yousef Huneiti, and was received by the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Abdullah II bin Al Hussein.

During the visit, the importance of the bilateral defense cooperation program between Cyprus and Jordan was reaffirmed, which is part of the network of international partnerships that the National Guard has developed with the armed forces of friendly and allied countries. At the same time, developments in the Middle East and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region were discussed, as well as the various aspects of defence cooperation between the Armed Forces of the two countries at bilateral, trilateral and multilateral levels.

On Tuesday, January 4, 2022, the Chief of the National Guard was officially received by his counterpart at the General Headquarters of the General Staff of the Jordanian Armed Forces, where a private meeting between the two Chiefs took place and then the Cypriot delegation was briefed on the Jordanian Armed Forces. During the meeting of the two Chiefs, which took place in an excellent atmosphere, traditional principled positions were expressed and then views were exchanged on international security challenges as well as the security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Lieutenant General Zervakis referred to the challenges facing Cyprus in the field of defence and security, while the common intention to deepen both the bilateral military cooperation programme and the corresponding trilateral programme with Greece to promote the excellent relations between the National Guard and the Jordanian Armed Forces, contributing to the joint efforts of Cyprus, Jordan and other friendly countries to ensure peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East was confirmed. Subsequently, he was briefed on the activities and capabilities of the Centre and toured its facilities and infrastructure, while the Director General of the Jordanian Defence Industry Design and Development Centre was also briefed by the Director General of the Jordanian Defence Industry Design and Development Centre.

On the same day, the Cypriot delegation visited the Martyrs' Memorial of the Jordanian Armed Forces, where the Chief, after paying tribute to those who died in the various wars from 1915 until today, received an interactive briefing at the adjacent Military Museum where important military relics related to the history of the Jordanian Armed Forces from the founding of the country until today are exhibited.

On Wednesday, 5 January 2022, the Chief was received by the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Abdullah II bin Al Hussein, at the Al Husseiniya Palace, in Amman. During the meeting, the Chief briefed the King on the excellent impressions and outstanding results of his visit to Jordan, and discussed ways to further strengthen the military and defense cooperation that has been developed in recent years between the Armed Forces of the two countries, as well as international efforts to comprehensively counter terrorism.

During the visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Chief also met with Ambassador Michael Ioannou, who participated in all official contacts and visits and with whom the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Jordan were reviewed, as well as with the Archbishop of Jordan (Kyriakupolis), Mr. Christoforos.
