[PIO] Official Visit of the Chief of the National Guard to Armenia

The Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Demokritos Zervakis, accompanied by a delegation of officers of the General Staff of the National Guard, paid an official visit to Armenia on 18 and 19 January 2022, at the invitation of the Chief of the Armed Forces of the country, Major General Artak Davtyan.

During the visit, the importance of the bilateral military cooperation program between Cyprus and Armenia, as well as the trilateral program with Greece, was reaffirmed, which are part of the network of international cooperation that the National Guard has developed with the Armed Forces of friendly and allied countries. At the same time, developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and Caucasus region, issues of common interest as well as ways to upgrade and expand cooperation between the armed forces of the Republic of Cyprus and Armenia were discussed.

In particular, on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, the Chief of the National Guard was officially received by his counterpart at the Headquarters of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia, where the Cypriot delegation was briefed on the Armenian Armed Forces and the current situation in the wider Caucasus region. During the meeting of the two delegations, which took place in an excellent atmosphere, the traditional positions of principles were first formulated and then views were exchanged on the international security challenges faced by the two countries in their areas of interest. Lieutenant General Zervakis referred to the threats to security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region due to the constantly evolving actions of at least one particular hybrid actor. The intention of both parties to implement and further deepen the military cooperation programme was also recorded.

Subsequently, Lieutenant General Zervakis was received by the Minister of Defence of the country, Mr. Suren Papikyan, who expressed his gratitude for the support of the Republic of Cyprus and reiterated to the Chief of the National Guard the long-standing support of the Government of Armenia for the resolution of the Cyprus problem in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.

Subsequently, the Cypriot delegation visited an Air Defence Unit of the Armenian Armed Forces and was briefed on its mission and capabilities. On the same day, the delegation visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial, where the Chief of the National Guard laid a wreath paying tribute to the victims, while a briefing and a tour of the adjacent Museum, where important relics related to the Genocide are exhibited.
