Councillor Mrs. Rita Theodorou Superman, Special Rapporteur of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) on the fight against terrorism and organized crime, addressed today, Thursday, 11 July 2024, an audiovisual message to the participants of the Coordinating Meeting of the Enlarged Advisory Council of the MPA's Parliamentary Forum for Women (PFW).

The Coordinating Meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 2nd Parliamentary Economic Forum of Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Countries, organized by the CMC in Marrakech, discussed the definition of the priorities of the CFS for the 2024-2026 biennium.

In her message, Theodorou Superman highlighted, among other things, the particular impact that insecurity due to conflict and terrorist threats has on women and girls and stressed the need for women's participation in peace and security policy making.

The Special Rapporteur also noted that the effectiveness of measures and policies for both combating terrorism and establishing security is undeniably increased when women are included in the process and therefore gender mainstreaming should be a prerequisite, particularly in the context of a holistic approach to countering terrorism and achieving peace and security.

Finally, Mrs Theodorou Superman made a proposal to the Council to include in the priorities of the CSF the objective of promoting the UN Agenda for Women, Peace and Security, which reaffirms the important role of women in conflict prevention and resolution, peace negotiations, and peace-building and peace-keeping. Through its proposal, it also calls on all States and actors at the international level to take the necessary measures to increase the equal and full participation of women in all UN efforts and actions to maintain and promote peace and security.

Superman's proposal was voted by the members of the Council.
