The Nicosia Sewerage Board (LSC) informs the public that in the early morning hours of Tuesday, 29 August 2023, a collapse occurred in a sewage pipeline, which is located within the buffer zone and the occupied territories, and which carries a significant amount of wastewater from both the free areas and the occupied territories to the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Mia Milia.

As a result of the collapse of these pipelines, there was a disruption of the flow to the Wastewater Plant in Mia Milia.

The PSC, in consultation with the United Nations, took interim measures and restored the flow of wastewater to the Wastewater Plant in Mia Milia on the afternoon of 30 August 2023. At the same time, SAL is taking all appropriate actions to address the situation that has arisen, including the management of any malodorous phenomena observed in the area.

SAL will provide a timely update at a later stage and depending on the evolution of the situation.

Finally, the GAC informs the public that, well before the above incident, procedures had been initiated in consultation with the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme Office in Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot Community, in order to achieve the complete replacement of the obsolete pipeline (made of asbestos) with a new, modern type of pipeline, along its entire length from the buffer zone to the Mias Milia sewage plant, in order to ensure the efficient operation and reliability of the sewerage system of Nicosia.
