In the context of the work of the 3rd part of the 2024 session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the member of the Cypriot delegation, MP, Mr. George Loucaides, a member of the Delegation of the Cypriot delegation, spoke yesterday at the Plenary Session of the Assembly in a debate on "the war in Gaza, the need to free the hostages, achieve a ceasefire and provide humanitarian assistance."
In his intervention, Mr Loucaides referred to the inhumane living conditions of the Palestinian people and the genocide taking place in occupied Gaza. He condemned the deliberate deprivation by the State of Israel of access to basic needs and services for the civilian population of Gaza, the deaths of thousands of women and children and civilians in general and the almost total destruction of Gaza's infrastructure. He pointed out that nothing can justify the atrocities against the civilian population, the serious violations of international humanitarian law and the collective punishment of the Palestinians. He also said that members of humanitarian organizations active in Gaza and media representatives have been targeted.
Unfortunately, he noted, there has been no condemnation or even outright criticism of these atrocities by the Council of Europe, an organization mandated to defend human rights. He expressed the view that the silence of the organisation jeopardises its credibility and its ability to intervene in international affairs. It was not possible, he said, for the Organization's officials and the CSTO to be immediately sensitized to the condemnable attacks by Hamas, but hypocritically and in the context of two measures and two stations not to adopt the same attitude towards the State of Israel, which was committing war crimes. This tolerance, he argued, amounts to support for the inhumane and dangerous policy of the Netanyahu government, which, through the attitude of the international community, continues its military operations undisturbed, ignoring the need for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian aid and relief for the victims and a return to dialogue in search of a political and peaceful settlement of the issue.
