Mr. Averof Neophytou, head of the Cypriot delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), is travelling to New York today to participate in the Parliamentary Hearing co-organized by the IP and the UN, on 8 and 9 February 2024, on the main theme "Ending Conflict: Proposals for a peaceful future". Mr. Neophytou will be accompanied by Senior International Relations Officer Ms. Augusta Christou.

The main objective of the 2024 Parliamentary Hearing is to provide national parliaments' input to the discussions leading up to the International Compact for the Future, which is expected to be adopted at the UN Future Summit in September 2024. Keynote speakers at the Hearing will be UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis and IC President Tulia Ackson. They will discuss, among other topics, the need for renewed collective action to achieve international peace and security, as well as the importance of respect for international law, the protection of human rights and the rule of law as essential prerequisites for ensuring conditions of peace and stability today and in the future. Neophytou will participate in an on-site electronic survey to ascertain the views and trends of the participants on the issues to be addressed during the Hearing.
