The 14th Session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) concluded today in Baku, Azerbaijan, with the participation of MP George Loucaides. The main theme of the session, which is attended by delegations from 25 AAC member parliaments, is the promotion and strengthening of regional cooperation in order to promote sustainable development throughout Asia. Prior to the opening of the Plenary, a meeting of the Assembly's Executive Council was held. More than ever, he continued, there is an urgent need for cooperation and collective action if we are to overcome the multiple challenges of the times, which call into question the role and importance of multilateralism, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes. Parliaments, he noted, must use the multiple challenges facing the world as an opportunity to redesign sustainable and prosperous societies.

Referring to Cyprus in particular, Mr.Loukaides said that our country has adopted the implementation of sustainable development policies in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, actively supporting international cooperation on related issues. He noted that the implementation of the 2030 Agenda depends, inter alia, on the ability of parliaments to formulate the necessary legal framework for the green transition as a means to address climate change and its devastating consequences. Moreover, he stressed, Cyprus, due to its geostrategic position, has the potential to act as a connecting hub between Europe, the Middle East and Asia, with particular emphasis on its ability to respond immediately to regional or other crises through its organisational framework, thus enhancing its role in the turbulent Eastern Mediterranean region. Cyprus' specific role in crisis management and humanitarian aid can be further exploited in the context of our participation in the APS, the MP said.

In conclusion, Mr.Loukaides referred to the essential value of parliamentary diplomacy and participation in regional organizations such as the APS, where efforts to ensure a better future for future generations are ensured through the promotion of the principles and values of unity, respect for human rights, solidarity and the promotion of the principles and values of solidarity, and the promotion of a better future for all.
