In the framework of the International Political Conference on "Politics as a space for the expression of Christian values in everyday life", MP Mr. Ilias Myrianthous, member of the Cypriot delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (IPA), participated today in a round table discussion entitled "Christian values and everyday politics: Truths, Obstacles, Dependencies", which was organized in Thessaloniki.
Mr. Mirianthous, in his intervention, noted that while the European Parliament, as the legislative body of the European Union (EU), is the eminently representative institution of the Union and therefore must ensure the pluralism of views and ideological pluralism of European societies, nevertheless, European citizens who are driven by Christian ideals and values do not see their views represented, to the extent that they should be, at the EU level. The main causes of this oddity, the Cypriot MEP pointed out, are, among others, the overabundance of priority issues and the risks of misinformation and fake news that political formations have to deal with, both at national and European level. At the same time, Mirianthous added, the technocratic structure of the EU often attempts, with distorted arguments, to convince politicians who manage European issues that religious values are the same as religious faith, overlooking the fact that the values promoted by the religious sphere, especially the very culturally rich Christian sphere, belong to history and to humanity as a whole.
Mirianthous also underlined that, while democracy and dialogue are the main pillars of contemporary European reality, the final report on the Dialogue on the Future of Europe makes no reference to the Christian values and the Christian identity of the European peoples, silencing the opinion and voice of those who embrace this value system. He pointed out that both parliamentary discourse and participatory democracy must be further strengthened, thus preserving the open and inclusive nature of parliament and democracy.
