Mr. Andreas Pasiourtides, head of the Cypriot delegation to the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA), represented the Assembly at the MED9 Ministerial Meeting on "Education for Sustainable Development and the Green Transition in the Mediterranean", hosted by the Republic of Cyprus in Limassol.

In his intervention, Mr. Pasiourtides, citing UNESCO data, stressed that there is an alarmingly large gap in education and awareness of sustainable development. Pointing out that the Mediterranean region is strongly affected by climate change, Mr. Pasiourtidis noted that the CSM, as a member of the UN's Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development (MCSD), is working with all relevant stakeholders to review the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD), particularly with regard to strategies for the integration of sustainable development principles in the region's education systems.

Mr. Pasiourtidis also referred to the establishment by the CSM in 2014 of an Academic Platform to promote dialogue and regional cooperation between parliamentarians, academics and researchers, thus enhancing the exchange of knowledge and best practices on issues such as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the energy transition. He also announced the signing of an agreement between the CSM and the UNESCO Chairs in Italy to further strengthen their joint efforts on issues of mutual interest and, in particular, on SDGs in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.

He also noted the preparation of the first Parliamentarians' Guide for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea and its Coasts, as a tool for parliamentarians dealing with environmental legislation. In the framework of this Guide, which is the result of the cooperation of the CSM with the United Nations Environment Programme's Mediterranean Action Programme (UNEP/MAP), he said, the need for training on issues related to the seas and oceans and the integration of sustainable development in national education programmes is highlighted.

Mr. Pasiourtidis, informed the participants about the organization of the upcoming "2nd Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Countries Parliamentary Economic Forum" of the CMC, whose work includes a special session, which will discuss how higher education, research and development and innovation networks can contribute to support entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship, to long-term regional sustainable development. He concluded by calling for cooperation to ensure that through the work of the CSM Parliamentary Economic Forum, Education for Sustainable Development emerges as a key priority.
