[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 31 December 2021

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 31 December 2021:

- 2 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 638.

- 180 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 79 are in serious condition. A proportion of 85.48% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 18 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 169,476 PCR and antigen rapid tests have been performed.

- 5048 (positivity rate: 2.98% new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by PCR and antigen rapid test, bringing the total number of cases to 166,827.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 2 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:

- Male, aged 76 years, who died on 31 December in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- Female, aged 78, who died on 31 December at Famagusta General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 638, of which:

- 405 males (63.5%), and

- 233 females (36.5%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 180 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 79 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 79 patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 6 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 45 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 169,476 diagnoses performed, 14,971 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 154,505 by the antigen rapid test method, 5048 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 105 cases from 6,186 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  2. 1352 cases out of 7,816 samples taken through private initiative.
  3. 25 cases out of 480 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  4. 2815 cases from 121,614 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  5. 751 cases out of 32,891 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.

In addition, the following tests were performed without detecting a case:

  1. 0 cases from 2 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.
  2. 0 cases from 487 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
