The Ministry of Health announces that today, 23 January 2022:
- 3 deaths were announced from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 712.
- 238 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 76 are in serious condition. A proportion of 73.53% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 21 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 83,323 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 1,813 (positivity rate: 2.18%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 235,958.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 3 deaths announced with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 are:
- Female, aged 76 years, who died on 22 January at Limassol General Hospital
- Female, aged 85 years, who died on 23 January at Limassol General Hospital
- Female, aged 85 years, who died on 23 January at Limassol General Hospital.
- Woman, aged 84, who died on 23 January at Limassol General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 712, of which:
- 447 males (62.8%), and
- 265 females (37.2%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 238 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the inpatient units of the OCYP, of which 76 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 76 patients in serious condition, 27 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 45 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):
Of the 83,323 diagnoses performed, 4,564 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 78,759 by the antigen rapid test, 1,813 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 44 cases from 352 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 60 cases from 2,037 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 149 cases out of 1,866 samples taken through private initiative.
- 7 cases out of 137 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 666 cases from 30,703 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 885 cases out of 48,056 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
- 2 cases from 172 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
