[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 19 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 19 January 2022:

- No patient deaths with COVID-19 as the final cause of death were recorded, and therefore the total number of deaths remains 689.

- 248 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 92 are in serious condition. A proportion of 73.39% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 17 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 95,650 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 2,226 (positivity rate: 2.33%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 233,082.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

No deaths of patients with COVID-19 were recorded. Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 disease remains 689, of which:

- 434 males (63%), and

- 255 females (37%).

The average age of deaths from the disease is 76.1 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 248 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 92 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 92 patients in serious condition, 35 are intubated, 5 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 52 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 95,650 diagnoses performed, 6,732 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 88,918 by the antigen rapid test method, 2226 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 61 cases from 1,007 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 35 cases out of 1,376 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 329 cases out of 3,895 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 24 cases out of 318 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 985 cases from 50,222 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 792 cases out of 38,696 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.

In addition, the following tests were performed without detecting a case:

  1. 0 cases from 135 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.
  2. 0 cases from 1 sample taken as part of audits in closed facilities.
