[PIO] Ministry of Health announcement on new cases of COVID-19 - 18 January 2022

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 18 January 2022:

- 3 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 687.

- 257 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of whom 89 are in serious condition. A proportion of 69.65% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 17 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 104,965 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 2,200 (positivity rate: 2.1%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 230,856.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 3 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:

- Male, aged 89 years, who died on 17 January at Nicosia General Hospital

- Male, aged 90 years, who died on 18 January at Famagusta General Hospital

- Male, aged 90 years, who died on 18 January at Famagusta General Hospital.

- Female, aged 86, who died on 18 January at Paphos General Hospital.

Consequently, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 687, of which:

- 432 males (62.9%), and

- 255 females (37.1%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 76.1 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 257 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 89 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 89 patients in serious condition, 38 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator, and 47 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 104,965 diagnoses performed, 8,483 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 96,482 by the antigen rapid test method, 2200 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 74 cases from 1,263 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 54 cases out of 2,607 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 336 cases out of 4,034 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 38 cases out of 388 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1,050 cases from 45,251 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 642 cases out of 51,231 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 6 cases from 191 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
