The Ministry of Health announces that today, 12 January 2022:
- 4 people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 669.
- 266 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 93 of whom are in serious condition. A proportion of 76.32% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
- 16 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 112,233 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 3,197 (positivity rate: 2.85%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 215,271.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 4 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:
- Female, aged 68 years, who died on 9 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Limassol General Hospital.
- Female, aged 81, who died on 11 January at Paphos General Hospital.
- Male, aged 87, who died on 12 January at Limassol General Hospital.
- Male, aged 87, who died on 12 January at Limassol General Hospital.
- A man, aged 57, who died on 12 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
Consequently, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 669, of which:
- 419 males (62.6%), and
- 250 females (37.4%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 75.9 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 266 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 93 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 93 patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 61 in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):
Of the 112,233 diagnoses performed, 9,558 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 102,675 by the antigen rapid test method, 3197 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 317 cases from 2,489 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 43 cases out of 1,681 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 355 cases out of 4,843 samples taken through private initiative.
- 26 cases out of 381 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 1,352 cases from 56,091 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 1,097 cases out of 46,584 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
- 7 cases from 164 samples taken under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
