The development of Larnaca Port and Marina is a project that will upgrade and significantly enhance not only the local community of Larnaca but also the economy of the whole of Cyprus, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Yannis Karousos said today. The Transport Minister was speaking during a visit to the Port of Larnaca today, accompanied by the Chairman and Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Communications and Works and the Mayor of Larnaca and the Director General of the Ministry of Transport.
Specifically, the Minister, the MPs and the Mayor visited Larnaca Port in the morning and were briefed by Kition Ocean Holdings Ltd on the progress of the development project of the Port and Larnaca Marina. Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Karousos pointed out that the Parliamentary Transport Committee had the opportunity today to be informed about "the development, details and timelines of this mega project, which is essentially the largest investment we have in Cyprus at the moment and will exceed 1.2 billion euros, with a benefit to the economy of about 120 million euros per year."
Everything is according to schedule, Mr. Minister, conveying the certainty that "we will be ready on April 1 to hand over the Port and Marina of Larnaca to the investor and this route for the development of the Port and Marina, for the development of Larnaca, but more generally it is a project that will upgrade and significantly strengthen the economy of the whole of Cyprus."
For his part, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Communications and Works, Marinos Mousiuttas, said that in the context of the new composition of the Parliament, the Transport Committee decided to visit all the Districts to record issues and problems that fall under its jurisdiction.
Referring to the Larnaca Port and Marina project, Mousiuttas said: "We have heard from the investors how this project will be developed. What we have gained so far is that there is a huge unanimity from all Larnaca stakeholders, Town Halls, government departments, private individuals, so that this project will be a jewel for both Larnaca and Cyprus. We as a Commission will follow the progress of the project, we are ready to help where needed."
Asked to say whether the construction works at the Port and Marina of Larnaca will affect its proper functioning, Mr. Moussioutta noted that, according to the information they received, all efforts are being made so that the impact will be the least possible.
In turn, the Mayor of Larnaca, Mr. Andreas Vyras, thanked the Transport Committee for its interest and visit today to Larnaca and in particular to the Port of Larnaca in order to provide information on the development of the project. "As we have reported, and the role of the Commission has been very helpful during the procurement process. Too many times the issue was discussed in the Committee and the role of the MPs was very helpful on several occasions," said Vyras.
He went on to say that "as a city we are pleased not only has the award been made, but because the project is proceeding according to plans and schedules and this is due to all the stakeholders, the Ministry, the government agencies, and the investors themselves we are pleased to see that they are interested in the project, they are doing everything they can to ensure that it proceeds as planned. What I want to say is that as Larnaca we are looking forward to this project with great anticipation. It is a project for which the city has been striving for decades and we are happy to see it now being implemented and it is now a matter of moving forward and implementing a project that is in line with our expectations. A project that will bring cooperation, a project that will help economic development and also improve the quality of life in the city. I want to thank again all those who are running and progressing the project as we have agreed."
