The preparation of the Republic of Cyprus to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026, issues related to the European agenda, regional developments, the current situation in the Cyprus problem, as well as Euro-Turkish relations were among the issues discussed at the meeting of the Deputy Minister of State for European Affairs, Ms. Marilena Rauna, with the Hungarian Minister of European Affairs, Mr. Janos Boka, who paid a working visit to Cyprus.

The Hungarian Minister paid a one-day working visit, at the invitation of the Deputy Minister Mrs Rauna, during which he had a morning tour of the Chrysaliniotissa area and walked along the ceasefire line, where, accompanied by his Cypriot counterpart, he saw for himself the situation in Europe's last divided city.

Ms Raouna and Mr Boka then went to the Presidential Palace, where they attended a one-to-one meeting, followed by extended talks between the delegations of the two countries.

During the talks, Ms Rauna briefed the Hungarian Minister on developments in the Cyprus problem, our side's efforts to resume negotiations from the point where they were interrupted in Crans-Montana, on the basis of the agreed framework, the European acquis and the principles and values of the EU. They also discussed the importance of the EU's role, both in the efforts to resume negotiations and in the resolution of the Cyprus problem, under the auspices of the United Nations.

They also discussed regional developments, migration, Euro-Turkish relations, as well as issues related to the European agenda and the priorities of the Hungarian EU Presidency.

The Deputy Minister for European Affairs referred extensively to the plans and preparations of the Republic of Cyprus with regard to the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026, while there was an exchange of views on best practices for the successful conduct of the respective presidencies of the two countries.

Mr. Boka departed from Cyprus late in the afternoon.
