Today, 20 November 2023, the Minister of Interior Mr.Konstantinos Ioannou will depart for Athens, where tomorrow he will have a meeting with the Minister of Migration and Asylum Mr.Dimitris Kairidis. On the same day, Mr Ioannou will visit the International Organization for Migration's migrant shelters.
Mr Ioannou and Mr Kairidis will discuss issues related to the management of migration, in view of the meeting of the Internal Affairs Council to be held in Brussels on 4-5 December 2023. In addition, Mr Ioannou will reiterate the position of the Republic of Cyprus regarding the launch of a consultation at European Union level on the re-evaluation of the status of Syria, based on the evaluation of the European Union Asylum Agency (EUAA).The aim of the Cypriot Minister's proposal is the evaluation and designation of specific areas in Syria as safe, which will allow the return of Syrian migrants, particularly from the European frontline states in the Eastern Mediterranean, which receive the largest number of Syrian migrants. Mr Ioannou will be briefed on the procedures followed in these structures and will explore the possibility of cooperation for the exchange of know-how and best practices. Ioannou returns to Cyprus on Wednesday, 22 November.
