The 77th World Health Assembly, which is taking place in Geneva, was addressed today by the Minister of Health, Mr. Minister, referred to the multifaceted challenges facing the health sector globally due to inequalities, emerging diseases and the impact of climate change. The situation is worsening, he added, due to ongoing military conflicts which have a devastating impact on people's lives.

The COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Damianos also said, has highlighted the vulnerabilities in global health systems. It has shown us, he said, that health crises can quickly transcend our borders, requiring a coordinated international response.

"It is imperative that we collectively address these global challenges, drawing on our shared knowledge and resources to build a healthier future for all. The theme of this year's Assembly, "All for Health, Health for All", should serve as a navigational point when sailing in troubled waters, he noted.

Cyprus, Damianos pointed out, provides an example of navigating these global health challenges, taking remarkable steps to improve public health. "We have created a strong network with the participation of more than 90% of the country's health care providers."

"We have created a strong network with the participation of more than 90% of the country's health care providers. This has resulted in a dramatic reduction in spending on private healthcare from 50% to around 12%. While we are proud of these significant achievements, we recognize that a five-year-old health system has its weaknesses and we understand that we need to address them to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Universal Health Care System."

In conclusion, Damianos called on everyone to invest in the health sector and expressed his gratitude to the World Health Organization for its work to ensure the highest possible level of health for all.
