The kick-off meeting for the project "Strengthening the Mental Resilience of Young People in Cyprus", which is funded by the European Commission following a request submitted by the Directorate of Nursing Services of the Ministry of Health, is underway since this morning.

The results of the project will contribute significantly to the development of the National Mental Health Strategy and to the field of mental resilience of the young population in Cyprus. The total budget of the project, which will run for 26 months, amounts to €500,000.

In his address, which was read by the Director of Nursing Services, Evagoras Tabouris, the Minister of Health, Michael Damianos, warmly thanked the European Commission for its decision to fund the project and to provide technical support to the Ministry of Health for the next two years. He also thanked UNICEF, which undertook the implementation of the project.

The Minister noted that one of the Strategic Objectives of the Ministry of Health is to provide quality preventive care through the design, implementation and evaluation of preventive programmes and the promotion of Public Health.

In Cyprus, Damianos noted, the progress made in the field of Public Health over the last decades has been tremendous. "Significant financial resources have been invested by both the state and the private sector. "However, in a society that is constantly evolving, creating new and daily increasing health needs, we are obliged to further innovate and strengthen our services accordingly," the Health Minister added.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the rising cost of living, he said, had a huge impact on people's mental health and well-being. "Available evidence has shown that, compared to many other social groups, young people have been disproportionately more affected," he added.

The project, Damianos noted, will contribute significantly to the Ministry of Health's initiative to develop a National Mental Health Strategy, in collaboration with all stakeholders.

"This is an opportune time to strengthen our partnership with our young people to promote mental health. There is a willingness and motivation among all stakeholders to promote the mental wellbeing of young people and to improve their psychosocial support," he concluded.
