The data concerning health care in our country, the current situation in the health sector and future prospects were presented at an event organized by the Rotary Clubs of Nicosia by the Minister of Health, Dr. Poppy Kanari.
Referring to the introduction of the General Health System in our country, Dr. Kanari stressed that this is one of the biggest reforms in the history of the Republic of Cyprus. Its uniqueness, she added, lies in the fact that it offers equal access to health services to all beneficiaries without restrictions. The YESY has been embraced by our fellow citizens, he noted, a fact that is reflected in a survey conducted by the University of Nicosia, which shows that the satisfaction rates of the population for the services offered range from 85-91%. She stressed that the highest goal of the Ministry of Health is to support and upgrade the GESY, as well as to ensure its financial sustainability.
"With the implementation of the GESY, the role of the Ministry of Health is now focused on policy formulation and the regulation, supervision and monitoring of the health care system, which requires the reorganization of the Ministry, a process that is currently underway," the Minister pointed out.
Dr Kanari also referred to the flagship actions of the Ministry of Health for the period 2023/2024, which include, among others.
- Enhancing the access of GHS beneficiaries to the health services provided (integration of new innovative medicines, possibility of issuing an urgent referral, possibility of prescribing specialised medicines by a personal physician in order to reduce waiting lists).
- Promotion of legislation for the establishment and operation of Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Centres, as well as for Palliative Care.
With regard to the issue of legislation, the Minister noted that the Ministry of Health is promoting many important pieces of legislation, which, among other things, will contribute to the upgrading of the legal framework in the health sector. In total, she said, 10 bills are being finalized at the Ministry of Health level while another seven (7), are already at the level of the Legal Service for Legislative Technical Review for legislative review. Dr. Kanari, on this occasion, pointed out the great importance of enacting legislation for University Hospitals as soon as possible.
On the issue of upgrading e-Health and promoting Modern Technologies, Dr. Kanari said that the implementation of the National Electronic Health Record of the Citizen and the creation of the National e-Health Bank by the National e-Health Authority is being promoted. At the same time, the implementation of health services on mobile devices at national level for Cypriot citizens (myHealth@cy) is promoted, aiming at the access and control of citizens to their medical data.
Finally, Dr Kanari referred to the EU-funded project "Capacity Planning in the health sector in Cyprus". Using the knowledge gained in the framework of this project, the Ministry of Health, as she noted, is promoting key adjustments in order to substantially strengthen its capacities in regulation, supervision, planning and decision making, in order to ensure the uninterrupted provision of quality services to patients, without deviations and limits.
