Health Minister Dr. Poppy Kanari paid a visit to the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre this morning
In her remarks, Dr. Kanari said that this was a symbolic visit, as 28 years ago today, the foundation stone for the creation of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre was laid. Dr Kanari noted that the Centre is a Model Centre in the field of Oncology and a "jewel" in the health sector in Cyprus. The Ministry of Health, she said, owes and supports the Centre over the years, both through its contribution to the Board of Trustees of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, in which the Director General of the Ministry of Health participates, and in many other ways.
Dr Kanari noted that the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre is considered to be a model and therefore will be recognised as a Centre of Reference and Excellence through a Ministry of Health programme, so that it will have an additional financial boost. Centres like this, she said, should be helped to keep the bar high, both in service delivery and in the areas of prevention, treatment, prognosis, education and research. "I believe that within the limits of possibilities with the consultations and discussions that we have with the OAI, we should look at such centres - which are even non-profit - such as the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, with a different perspective and approach so that there are corresponding approaches in the area of remuneration that the OAI gives towards the treatments that this centre provides," the Health Minister said.
Dr Kanari noted that the Oncology Centre provides its services both with the contribution of the State and with the contribution of the private sector, especially the Bank of Cyprus. Such partnerships, said the Minister of Health, are an example in the wider European sector.
The Minister of Health expressed her satisfaction with the work carried out at the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre and congratulated the doctors, nursing staff, health professionals, the Board of Directors of the Centre and the Board of Commissioners for their contribution. The Ministry of Health will be a support and partner in the development of the Centre, concluded Dr Kanari.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre, Mr Christos M. Triandafyllidis welcomed the Minister of Health to the Centre and noted that 28 years ago the then Minister of Health together with other visionaries, realizing a vision, laid the foundation stone for the operation of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre. "I am sure that these people, whether alive or wherever they are today, will feel vindicated for their decision as the Centre has possibly surpassed even their most optimistic expectations," said Mr Triantaphyllides and thanked the Minister of Health for the state's long-standing support to the Centre.
