A visit to the Athalassa Mental Health Hospital was made this morning by Minister of Health Dr. Popi Kanari. The Health Minister was briefed by the management of the hospital on all current issues, including the construction of new buildings in Athalassa.

In a statement after the meeting, the Minister said that her visit had two objectives "First, to show our support to the Mental Health sector and second, to give assurances to staff that a National Strategy for Mental Health is being promoted within 2024, with the participation of several institutions such as the Ministry of Education, the State Ministry of Social Welfare and other non-governmental organizations and partners."

Dr Kanari explained that a committee has already been set up for the development of the National Strategy for Mental Health, in which all partners are involved, while support is also provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Regarding the upgrading projects, which the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) is promoting at the Athalassa Hospital, the Health Minister said that the first wing is expected to be completed in March 2024 and "will substantially upgrade the level of services offered to patients". The second phase will be completed, she said, before 2026, while the inauguration of the structures created in the municipality of Latsia will take place on January 19.

During her visit to the hospital site, the Health Minister congratulated the officials of the Athalassa Hospital who last month helped evacuate the hospital when a fire broke out in a hospital area. "I felt the need to congratulate these individuals because they are an example," the minister said.

The management of the hospital informed the Minister that work on one of the two damaged wards has been completed and the ward is back in operation, while as for the second ward, work is expected to start after Christmas and be completed in January.
