As every year, this year we are faithful to the appointment of history and social solidarity. The Cyprus Cancer Society is organizing the 49th Christodoula March, the largest, as we all know and have established over the years, cancer awareness campaign in our country.

It is indeed with great emotion that I participate in today's event, along with the organizers of the campaign, but also the many volunteers and staff of the Bank of Cyprus, the constant helper and supporter of this great effort.

It is indeed with great emotion that I participate in today's event, along with the organizers of the campaign and the many volunteers and staff of the Bank of Cyprus, the constant helper and supporter of this great effort. I stand respectfully before you, admiring the boundless strength of soul and love of you, the people of Cyprus. We all admire the strength of Christodoula's soul from Agios Memnonas Famagusta, but also the strength of every person who fights with conviction and optimism, who never gives up.

Christodoula, 50 years ago, driven from her home, under the threat of the Turkish invader and overwhelmed by cancer, set out on foot from Agios Memnonas Famagusta, in order to reach Sotiras Famagusta, where she unfortunately breathed her last under a tree. She may have been defeated by cancer in the tragic circumstances of the invasion, but her passion and will to live became a symbol and example for all of us. For those who fight with all the strength of their soul for life, for their fellow man, for society and for their country are never defeated, but their struggle is always hopeful and translates into a struggle of will to live, to resist and to persevere.

I again congratulate the Cyprus Cancer Society, its President, my friend Dr. Adamos, for their long-standing contribution to our fellow cancer patients and to our society in general, through the provision of specialized support and palliative care services, information, education, research and the assertion of patients' rights. Your action is beyond valuable and important, your action comes to complement our work, the essential work of the State. Especially this year's march, the 49th in a row, has established itself in the consciousness of all our fellow citizens and our society has embraced it with love and trust, as demonstrated through your massive presence.

Congratulations, then, to all of you and let the march begin.
