It is with great pleasure that I welcome the annual "Evening of Love" organized by the Cyprus Cancer Society
An evening, which, following the multidimensional activity of the Society's members, aims to further strengthen its high and commendable mission.
A mission, directly intertwined with the offer of palliative care services to our fellow human beings suffering from cancer on the one hand and the multifaceted support to their families on the other hand.
A mission that is carried out through:
- Free provision of the services of the two Palliative Care Centres, Arodafnousa and Evagorio.
- The home care of patients throughout Cyprus.
- Educating the public on the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
Actions that make the Association and its members a valuable companion and helper of the state and the Health Services, regarding the effort of holistic treatment of cancer.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to note that in support of the Association's effort to improve and solve the problems faced by patients and their families, we have taken a number of targeted decisions.
By way of indication only, I note:
- The development of the National Cancer Institute, one of the primary purposes of the recently reconstituted National Cancer Commission
- The promotion of the preparation of legislation on palliative health care, with an anthropocentric and multidisciplinary approach
- The upgrading and expansion of screening population programs
And it is with great satisfaction that I welcome the fact that on the basis of the strategy adopted, in close collaboration with the Cancer Association and all the relevant organizations, we are supporting our fellow cancer patients in every possible way.
A strategy towards which we will continue to implement, strengthening, in addition to our own policies, the activity undertaken by the members of the cancer-related organisations.
A concrete proof of the recognition of the work carried out by the Anticancer Association is the state sponsorship in 2021 of €900.000.
Friends,
Your selfless acts have always been of decisive importance in the common efforts, which have contributed greatly to improving the quality of life and well-being of our fellow cancer patients.
It is in the volunteerism and social sensitivity of all of you that the Cyprus Cancer Society invests in order to continue to set and implement goals.
These are exactly the goals that the event organized this year serves.
I am convinced that all of us, as links in a great chain of social solidarity, will, through our contribution, continue this great offer of the Cyprus Cancer Society.
Friends,
At the same time, I would like to express the gratitude of the State and praise Lidl Cyprus, which, through the actions it develops within the framework of its corporate social responsibility, is one of the greatest supporters of the Association.
In conclusion, I would like to express the State's warmest thanks to the President and members of the Board of Directors, the qualified health professionals and the rest of the staff, and especially the volunteers who support the Association's operation, who, thanks to their special dedication, become a source of hope for our fellow sufferers.
Thank you once again and I assure you that, recognizing the important work that is being done, the state will, as a matter of duty, be at the side of both you and our suffering fellow citizens.
