It is with great pleasure that I am attending today's event of the dairy company "ALABPA" for the inauguration of the new state-of-the-art production and bottling unit for fresh milk and juice.
The Government and I personally cannot but be proud when we see family businesses in our country prospering, progressing and modernising. And because I have known the Petrou family and their daily hard work for many, many years, let me express my particular pleasure at their longevity as a result of very hard, systematic work and dedication. Starting from humble beginnings in the village and the recipes of grandmother Kakoullou, "ALABPA", with 40 years of experience in milk production and processing, has now become one of the most pioneering companies in the industry, supporting the Cypriot economy in many ways.
It is worth mentioning that, through its activities, it contributes substantially to the increasing trend of exports of Cypriot products, which, despite any challenges in the supply chain, amounted to 1.7 billion euros in 2022, an increase of 14.5% compared to the previous year, 2021. The €284 million relates to exports of haloumi, one of Cyprus' main export products, with "ALABPA" holding a significant market share, currently exporting PDO haloumi to a total of 40 countries around the world.
At the same time, the company provides and supports, directly and indirectly, a large number of jobs in our country, since, for example, it collects milk from more than 400 producers operating throughout free Cyprus.
The plant we are inaugurating today in the Aradippou Industrial Area, which involves an investment of more than 10 million euros, is the new business initiative of the Petrou family. In admittedly difficult conditions, with intense competition within and outside Cyprus, but also the effects of the unprecedented energy crisis that we are experiencing, and I know very well that you are concerned, this important investment confirms that the manufacturing sector has a leading position in the business environment of our country and shows a huge potential for further growth, especially in the food sector. With a budget of approximately EUR 25 million, this Project is being implemented under the Cyprus Plan for Tomorrow and is funded by the EU's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism. In conclusion, I would like to assure you that the Government is always concerned and stands by the business community of our country, providing all of you with practical support in all your efforts for growth and progress.

In this context, we encourage the creation of modern and technologically upgraded units, such as the one we are inaugurating tonight, by implementing specialized Support Plans to increase their competitiveness in both the domestic and foreign markets. And I think it is of particular importance, and I think we all agree on this, that increasing exports, of our country's products, is a national gamble for the Government. In this context, I was particularly pleased to hear from the Israeli Prime Minister, following our consultations, something that also concerns "ALAMBRA", that the Israeli market will now be opened for dairy products, with particular emphasis on products produced in Cyprus and Greece.
So, I congratulate "ALAMBRA" again for its new business step, I especially congratulate my friend George for his boldness, because he wanted boldness and audacity to start this effort so many years ago, but also something that characterizes him is that he gives substantial space and initiatives to the new generation that we see with us tonight. Of course we should all congratulate Maria who is the backbone of the company and supports them all.
