World Teachers' Day was established by UNESCO in 1994 to honour all teachers for their significant contribution to education and society and their crucial role in the development of children and young people.
The role of teachers, both historically and through the findings of research on school effectiveness, has emerged as critical in acquiring knowledge, shaping character, developing critical thinking and life skills to enable children and young people to become autonomous, responsible and active citizens. Teachers, through their profession, can have a transformative impact on the lives of children and young people, helping to shape a sustainable future for our societies and offering opportunities for personal fulfilment.
With the establishment of World Teachers' Day, UNESCO seeks not only to show appreciation and respect for the individual teacher, but also to focus on processes by which teachers can improve themselves, for the benefit of education and their country's society. It is generally accepted that the heart of any change in the education system is the teacher. At the same time, the driving force for the social change we seek begins at school and the teacher is the agent of that change.
Under the theme "The teachers we need for the education we want - the global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage", World Teachers' Day 2023 aims to highlight the problems arising from the decline in the number of teachers around the world and to advocate for the need for a decent and valued profession, analyse the challenges and present practices that will attract and motivate teachers to practice their profession. In this context, the establishment of this day provides an opportunity to highlight ways in which education systems and societies in general recognise, value and actively support teachers.
In the case of Cyprus, the professional learning of teachers is one of the key policies of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY) towards the modernization of our education system and the upgrading of the role of the teacher as an active professional. The professional learning of our teachers places them at the centre of their own learning journey, responsible for the transformation of their teaching practice and their professional identity.
Ensuring teachers' continuous professional learning is the main way to shape the education we need and the future we want. Through a variety of actions, the Ministry of Education and Science covers the empowerment of teachers to offer quality education. Providing equal opportunities in learning, inclusive education and inclusion are elements that are emphasised in our teachers' professional learning. At the same time, additional actions, such as the "School Unit Improvement Plan" established by a Council of Ministers' Decision, consolidate a school that is a familiar and safe place for both children and teachers.
By empowering teachers through democratic processes and seeking dialogue with educational organizations and organized parents to provide and utilize the necessary resources, we aim for a society where access to quality education will be a priority and where teachers will have access to quality education.

I convey to them the sincere thanks of the State for their enduring struggles and their invaluable contribution to our country.
