This year marks the 63rd anniversary of the declaration of Cyprus as an independent state. The establishment of the Republic of Cyprus on 16 August 1960, as a result of the glorious liberation struggle of EOKA that preceded it, is a landmark date in the history of our country.

With the end of the long foreign domination of our land, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots were invited, on the basis of the provisions of the Zurich-London Agreements, to coexist peacefully in a Republic which was internationally recognised and became a member of the United Nations and other international organisations. They were called upon to contribute jointly to the building of the newly established state and to lead it to progress and prosperity. First the bicommunal riots of 1963-64 and then the civil strife and the absurdity of the coup against the legitimate Government, led inevitably to the culmination of the Turkish invasion, the most tragic page in the history of our island.

However, and despite the painful consequences of the sad events of 1974 that still exist, the Cypriot people managed to get back on their feet, making significant achievements. Thanks to the hard work, fighting spirit, patience and perseverance of our people, and despite the challenges that followed, the state entity was kept intact, high levels of progress were achieved and the Republic of Cyprus was transformed into a modern European country with international recognition.

Dear pupils, students,

On the occasion of October 1, the official day of the celebration of the anniversary of Cyprus' independence, we pay tribute and gratitude to all those who throughout time have fought and sacrificed for freedom, the defence of democracy, territorial integrity and sovereignty of our homeland. As the Turkish occupation has continued for more than 49 years, we set their course as a beacon for our own course.

It is our duty, through unity, collectivity and unanimity to continue the struggle for the liberation and reunification of our homeland, as well as to further strengthen Cyprus' position as a reliable partner and an important pillar of peace, stability and security in the wider region.

At the same time, it is our duty to lead our homeland to even greater growth and prosperity.

At the same time, it is our duty to lead our homeland to even greater growth and prosperity. To this end, we are investing in all of you, our young people. In this context, the aim of the modern, democratic and inclusive school we are shaping is to nurture your spirit, strengthen your personality and develop you into democratic and active thinking citizens. Citizens who, fully aware of our historical identity, will take over the reins and governance of the country, ensuring its course as a modern, European state, a course that will allow its citizens to live together peacefully in conditions of mutual respect, security and freedom.

Your love for your country, the optimism and determination you demonstrate in achieving your goals, through the guidance of your teachers, justifies our faith in your abilities and the expectations we place in you as the future and hope of this country, as the future of the Republic of Cyprus.

Happy Birthday
