With feelings of pride we commemorate this year the anniversary of the Revolution of March 25, 1821.
As the pinnacle of the historical consciousness of the Greeks and Greek women, the Greek Revolution condensed their common will to throw off Turkish tyranny, uniting them around the lofty idea of gaining their freedom. Fighting the battle against a clearly superior force, the Greek people demonstrated unwavering devotion to the oath of the Society of Friends, unparalleled fighting spirit, heroism, courage and self-denial, succeeding in provoking an international wave of philhellenism and becoming a symbol and source of inspiration for other enslaved peoples.
Founded on the universal human principles of justice, liberalism and equality of peoples, as well as on the other values espoused by the Enlightenment movement that influenced the era, the Greek Revolution is a milestone not only for Greek but also for European and world history. By paving the way for the formation of a democratic, free state governed by the rule of law, the enslaved have since made Greece a favoured state, a reliable partner of a united Europe and a co-founder of world peace.
In this path carved by Greece, illuminating the world over the centuries, Cypriot Hellenism, also groaning under the Turkish yoke, was once again at her side, reaffirming her desire for freedom. This unquenchable desire for the reunification of our homeland, which continues to groan for 50 years under Turkish occupation, turns our gaze to the defence of the principles and values bequeathed to us by the revolutionary Greeks. Principles and values, which are the great contribution of Hellenism to humanity and which solidify our conviction that our struggle for the prevalence of justice in our land can only be achieved through solidarity, unity and unity.
Dear teachers,
In this high, common effort, we invest in our Education. An Education which, as a guarantee for our historical continuity and social progress, guided by all of you, will cultivate and shape tomorrow's citizens, characterized by a sense of responsibility and faith in peace, democracy, human rights, solidarity and mutual respect. It will cultivate citizens who will fight for the reunification of our country.
Dear children, dear young people,
You are the future and the hope of our country. Taking as models the vision of the fighters of the 1821 Revolution, and of all those who have defended freedom and democracy throughout time, we are confident that you will lead our Cyprus to further progress and development, consolidating its position as an important pillar of peace, stability and security in the wider region.
Happy Birthday.
