Every year on 10 December we celebrate human rights, commemorating the adoption of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the vision of its inspirers for a world of equal rights and freedoms for all, without discrimination and exclusion. This Universal Declaration, adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly, recognised human dignity and equal and inalienable rights as the foundations of freedom, justice and peace in the world.
10 December is a reminder that all human rights - civil, political, social, cultural, economic - are universal, indivisible, inalienable, interdependent and interrelated. Despite the significant developments in the 75 years since the adoption of the Universal Declaration in the promotion and protection of human rights, the unprecedented challenges that constantly arise around the world do not allow for any complacency. On the contrary, they require initiatives and decisive actions to combat and prevent violations of human rights at the national and international level.
The Republic of Cyprus remains committed to the defence of human rights and fundamental freedoms and strives to ensure their full enjoyment by all, regardless of race, colour, religion, language, gender, political or other opinion, national or social origin, birth, wealth or social class.
The Republic of Cyprus remains committed to the defence of human rights and fundamental freedoms and strives to ensure their full enjoyment by all, irrespective of race, colour, religion, language, sex, political or other opinion, national or social origin, birth, wealth or social class. In this context, the Office of the Law Commissioner duly monitors, prepares and supervises the submission of periodic reports on the compliance of the Republic of Cyprus with ratified international human rights conventions and participates as head of delegations in the respective hearings/examinations before the competent bodies.
In particular, the Office of the Law Commissioner monitors the following UN conventions: The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966); the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1966); the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (1965), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (1979), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (1984). In parallel, the Legislative Commissioner's Office coordinates the drafting and submission of reports on the basis of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (1992) and the Council of Europe's Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (1995).
This year's United Nations motto for Human Rights Day is "Freedom, Equality and Justice for All".
