In the context of the work of the 2nd Session 2024 of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Strasbourg, the member of the Cypriot delegation to the PACE, Ms. Christiana Erotokritou spoke about the volatile situation in the Middle East following Iran's recent attack on Israel and the need to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

In her intervention, the Cypriot MP said that it is extremely difficult to normalise the situation amid escalating tensions and the lack of progress on the release of hostages and the desired ceasefire. Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel, she noted, is a flagrant violation of international law and must be condemned unequivocally by the international community.

Further, Ms. Erotokritou referred to the need for immediate and timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza for the relief of the Palestinian people, and to ensure that it is not obstructed by the terrorist organization Hamas.

Referring to the Amalthea project of the Republic of Cyprus, Ms Erotokritou stressed that the initiative has received international recognition and support and is a strong example of multilateral cooperation. She urged the member states of the Council of Europe to give political and practical support to the effort, which highlights the geo-strategic importance of Cyprus and the excellent network of relations it has developed with all the countries of the region.

The European Union, Ms Erotokritou stressed, must assume a more active role in the Middle East and especially in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is its southernmost border. Establishing conditions of peace and stability in the region of Europe through a more active EU presence, she pointed out, is the best guarantee for stopping extreme fundamentalism and terrorism.
