The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Institutions, Values and Governance, Mr Dimitris Demetriou, participated today in an interparliamentary meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions with the national parliaments of the Member States of the European Union (EU), in Brussels.
In his intervention during the discussion on the topic "The Right of Reference in Parliaments, Rules, Procedures and Practices", Mr Demetriou described such meetings as very important and constructive, which constitute a platform for cross-border cooperation, networking and exchange of knowledge and best practices between parliaments. Although, as he pointed out, there is no similar process in the Cypriot Parliament, the continuous strengthening of the channels of communication between the House of Representatives and citizens is an ongoing objective.
Moreover, the Cypriot MP made special reference to the role of the Committee on Petitions in the unanimous adoption by the Plenary of the European Parliament of the report on the return of the city of Famagusta to its legal residents, in November 2018, following a fact-finding visit by a Commission delegation to Cyprus.
