The Council of Ministers today approved the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Cyprus Police and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), thus institutionalizing closer cooperation between the two countries in their efforts to combat money laundering and effectively investigate cases involving financial crimes and, by extension, prosecute those involved.
The conclusion of this Memorandum reflects the efforts of the Government, and in particular the will and determination of the President of the Republic himself, to further strengthen the capacity of the country's law enforcement authorities to tackle illegal financial activities and to detect and prosecute financial crime.
The purpose of the Memorandum of Cooperation is to strengthen cooperation between the law enforcement authorities of the two countries in the areas of exchange of information and knowledge on issues of investigative methodology, tactics and techniques related to financial investigations, while ensuring the basic principle of confidentiality of such information.
The signing of the Memorandum is, on the one hand, an important development in further strengthening the bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United States of America and, on the other hand, in further enhancing the Cypriot and international cooperation in the field of financial investigations.
