The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, had a meeting today with the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs Athena Michaelidou, during which they discussed ways to effectively tackle the phenomenon of bullying in schools.

In this regard, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth referred to the actions undertaken by the Ministry for the establishment of effective preventive mechanisms for dealing with bullying in schools, stressing, among other things, the need for adequate training of teachers in identifying and dealing with these phenomena, based primarily on a student-centred approach.

Both sides stressed the need to simplify and strengthen the existing legislative framework for combating bullying, in order to address this social phenomenon, which has reached alarming proportions, and to this end, the need for cooperation between the executive and legislative authorities to effectively address it was stressed, in the light of the ongoing discussion of its criminalisation on the basis of a relevant legislative proposal whose rapporteurs are the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ms Anita Demetriou and Mr. Andreas Pasiourtides on behalf of the AKEL-Left New Forces parliamentary group.
