The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou received today the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Mr Khaldoun Nawaf Ahmad Hina, who is on an official visit to Cyprus. Mr. Hina was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Cyprus, Mr. Basheer Zubi.

During the meeting, the excellent level of relations between Cyprus and Jordan, based on common principles and values, was noted and the prospect of further strengthening cooperation between them in areas of common interest and at all levels, including the parliamentary level, was underlined.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, the Speaker expressed sincere thanks for the principled position and support of Jordan in its efforts to resolve it. Noting as a positive development the appointment of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, the Speaker of the House stressed that our side's objective is to resume negotiations from the point where they were interrupted, with a view to reaching a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, within the agreed framework and in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions.

Subsequently, views were exchanged on the escalating tension in the Middle East and its serious consequences for regional security and stability, with particular emphasis on the disproportionate migratory pressures faced by the two countries. In this regard, the Speaker of the Parliament condemned Turkey's instrumentalization of illegal immigrants in Cyprus and underlined the urgent need for a comprehensive and unified approach to address this issue. The need for an immediate end to the conflicts and the peaceful resolution of all disputes in accordance with international law, be it in the Middle East, Ukraine or Cyprus, and the need to avoid the logic of two measures and two stations. The President praised Jordan's leading role in the efforts for peace in the Middle East and underlined Cyprus' readiness to provide all possible support to the friendly country within the framework of the European Union. Demetriou also noted the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through the creation of a sea corridor, which, as the Jordanian official pointed out, his country supports and wishes to support. Mr. Hina underlined the important role of parliaments in creating the necessary dynamics for peace.

The President concluded by stressing that the answer to the current complex challenges is more cooperation between reliable partners who share the same principles and values, such as Cyprus and Jordan, both at the bilateral level and in the framework of the trilateral cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Jordan, for the benefit of the entire region.
