An informal meeting between the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr.Marios Hartsiotis, and the President of the C.S.EDEK, Mr.Marinos Sizopoulos, took place today, February 23, 2024, in a pleasant atmosphere.
The meeting was characterized as substantial and constructive by both officials with the intention and commitment on both sides for frequent and continuous contact to achieve the goals of social welfare, security and order of the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Minister of Justice and Public Order described the parties as a "pillar of assistance". The EPP, he added, has shown great sensitivity on social policy issues. He stressed that the Government has expressed its determination and will to implement the programme statements of the President of the Republic and as a Ministry we will work together with the EDEK towards the implementation of the objectives and other elements that fall within the Ministry's responsibilities.

Regarding the burning issue of decongestion of the Central Prison, he said that there will be mitigation of the problem by reducing the population by up to 30% with the transfer of the Open Prison to the new building that has been completed and the conversion of the existing Open Prison into the Central Prison by the autumn.
Also in the medium term, he said, the construction of a new Central Prison building within the existing block is being completed, with a completion schedule of 2026.
